All English [verbs](/tags/verb) are divided into three big groups of **transitive**, **intransitive** and **linking verbs**. The belonging to one of these groups influences the choice of the object the verb may be followed by: direct, indirect, indirect without a preposition, prepositional object or the complex object. Another reason to know about "transitivity/intransitivity" of a verb is to be able to use the verb in the [passive voice](/tags/verb-passive-voice). In addition, some verbs such as _get_, _grow_, _keep_, _look_, and alike, can be also link verbs that will strongly influence the meaning of a sentence.

Many English learners struggle with transitive verbs by adding unnecessary prepositions. Because of first-language (L1) interference from languages where a preposition is required, it is common to hear mistakes like *discuss about*, *reach to*, *enter into*, or *marry with*. However, high-impact transitive verbs such as *discuss*, *reach*, *enter*, *attend*, *marry*, and *contact* take a direct object immediately after the verb, without any preposition. For example, you should say "We discussed the plan" (not "discussed about the plan") and "She contacted the manager" (not "contacted to the manager").

It is also important to master verbs with special patterns. For instance, the verb *explain* follows the structure *explain + thing + to + person* (e.g., "He explained the rules to us"), rather than *explain + person + thing*. Conversely, some verbs are strictly intransitive and *do* require a preposition to connect to an object. Common examples include *arrive at* a destination or *listen to* a song.

### Understanding Verb + Object + Infinitive Structures

In English, many verbs follow a specific pattern where they take a direct object followed by an infinitive (to + verb). This construction allows us to express actions we want, expect, or cause others to perform. Common verbs that follow this pattern include *want*, *ask*, *tell*, *expect*, *allow*, *encourage*, *remind*, *persuade*, *advise*, and *force*.

For example: "She **asked him to help** with the project" or "The teacher **encouraged the students to participate** in the discussion." Notice how the object (him, the students) comes between the main verb and the infinitive. This is different from verbs that take only an infinitive without an object, such as "She decided to leave."

Some verbs can work both ways, with or without an object, but the meaning may change. Compare "I want to go" (no object) with "I want you to go" (with object). Additionally, certain verbs like *let* and *make* are followed by an object and a bare infinitive (without "to"): "She **made him apologize**" rather than "made him to apologize."

For instance, French or Spanish speakers might incorrectly say "depends of" instead of the correct *depends on*. Other common mistakes include dropping the preposition completely (like saying "listen the music") or using the wrong one (such as "agree to you").
