For example, in the sentence "I will hire whoever is most qualified," the entire clause acts as the direct object of the verb hire, while whoever serves as the subject of the clause itself. Similarly, in "What you need is a vacation," the nominal relative clause functions as the subject of the main sentence.

Adverb

An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb, telling you how, when, where, how often, or to what degree: she sings beautifully, unbelievably fast, we go there often. Most form with -ly (quick → quickly), but a stubborn group don't change shape at all: fast, well, hard, late.

Clause

If you've ever been told your sentence is a "run-on" or that you've used a comma where there should be a semicolon — you've hit the limits of writing without seeing clauses. Get this concept solid and most punctuation problems quietly disappear: you can finally tell a complete thought from a fragment without guessing.

A clause is a grammatical unit built around a verb, usually with a subject and a predicate. Independent clauses stand alone (I missed the bus); dependent clauses can't (Because I overslept). Combine them and you build complex sentences.

Complex sentence

If your writing is technically correct but reads like a list of short, disconnected statements — I overslept. I missed the bus. I was late. — you've hit the limit of what simple sentences can do. Complex sentences are how you fuse those into one flowing thought (Because I overslept, I missed the bus and was late). It's the single biggest jump in writing maturity.

A complex sentence combines an independent clause with at least one dependent clause: I missed the bus because I overslept. The dependent clause typically signals time, reason, condition, or describes a noun, and is introduced by subordinating conjunctions (because, although, if, when) or relative pronouns.

Determiner

If you speak a language without articles or demonstratives — Mandarin, Russian, Polish, Japanese, Korean — determiners are likely the most stubborn topic in your English. The rules feel small but the wrong choice (I went to home instead of I went home) immediately marks you as non-native. Mastering determiners is the highest-leverage move you can make for sounding natural.

A determiner comes before a noun to clarify which one, how many, or whose. Categories include articles (a/the), demonstratives (this/that), possessives (my/your), and quantifiers (some/many).

Noun

If you've ever frozen mid-sentence wondering whether to say an information or some information, child or children, they or them — you've hit the core of how English uses nouns. Nail this down and articles, plurals, possessives, and pronoun choice all stop feeling like guesswork.

A noun is a word that names something: a person, place, thing, idea, action, or quality. Nouns are the building blocks every other part of speech bolts onto. Spot one in a sentence and you can usually predict the article, the verb form, and the pronouns that follow.

Object

If you've ever written I gave and felt the sentence was unfinished, or written She arrived the airport (it should be at the airport) — you've felt the rules around objects. Different verbs demand different object structures, and English is fussy about which preposition (if any) joins the object to the verb. Getting it right is the difference between sounding fluent and sounding translated.

In grammar, an object is the entity a verb acts on. Three types: direct object (Sam fed the dogs), indirect object (She sent him a present), prepositional object (She waited for Lucy).

Preposition

If you've ever written I'm interested on you (should be in) or I'm good on football (should be at) — you've hit prepositions' main pitfall. Their choice is mostly idiomatic, not logical, and rarely matches what your native language does. Memorising the right preposition for each common verb and adjective is what stops your speech from sounding subtly off.

A preposition is a small word linking a noun or noun phrase to other parts of the sentence: in, on, at, to, from, with. Marks time, place, manner, or abstract relationships. Choice is largely idiomatic, especially in fixed combinations (depend on, good at, afraid of).

Pronoun

If you've ever paused before who vs whom, its vs it's, or me vs I — you've felt how much weight pronouns carry in English. They're tiny words but they're case-sensitive (I vs me), context-dependent, and one of the few places where everyday English still trips careful speakers. Get the common patterns right and you instantly sound more careful.

A pronoun is a closed class of small words that replace nouns or noun phrases. Types: personal (I, you, he…), demonstrative (this, that), relative (who, which), interrogative (who?, what?), reflexive (myself), and indefinite (everyone, nobody).

Relative clause

A relative clause is a dependent clause modifying a noun, introduced by a relative pronoun (who, whom, whose, which, that) or relative adverb (where, when, why). Restrictive relatives are essential and unmarked; non-restrictive are extra information and set off with commas.

Sentence

If your writing has been called "choppy" or "monotonous", the issue is usually sentence variety — not vocabulary. English readers expect a mix of short and long, simple and complex sentences. Even the same content reads completely differently depending on how you stitch the clauses together.

A sentence is the largest grammatical unit, made of one or more clauses. Four structural types: simple (one independent clause), compound (two+ independents joined), complex (independent + dependent), compound-complex (multiple of each). Ends with period, question mark, or exclamation mark.

Subject

If you've ever written The list of items are wrong (should be is wrong) — you've hit the subject-agreement trap. The subject is list, not items, and the verb has to agree with it. Long sentences with prepositional phrases between the subject and verb are where this most often goes wrong, and getting it right is what stops careful readers from flagging your writing.

The subject is the part of a sentence or clause that says who or what the sentence is about. Typically a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase before the verb, controlling the verb's number and person.

Verb

If grammar feels overwhelming, the fix is almost always to focus on verbs first. They carry the action, the time, the mood, and the voice — a single verb form decides whether your sentence reads as past or present, fact or hypothetical, active or passive. Get verbs solid and the rest of grammar suddenly looks much smaller.

A verb expresses action, state, or occurrence — the engine of every English sentence. Most verbs have five forms (base, -s, past tense, past participle, -ing); be has eight; modal verbs have fewer. Verbs carry tense, aspect, mood, and voice.

C2 | Proficiency

If you can argue a point in English, then switch register to comfort someone, then crack a joke that lands — without thinking about which words to choose — you're operating in C2 territory. Most learners don't need to reach this level. The reason it matters is the opposite: knowing C2 exists stops you from setting it as the bar when B2 or C1 is more than enough for what you actually want to do.

C2 is the proficiency level — the highest on the CEFR scale. It means near-native control of idiomatic range, register-switching, irony, and complex written argument across any subject.

Difficulty: Hard

If easy and medium questions are clicking but you still feel exposed in real conversation or formal writing, you've outgrown the basics. Hard material is where the gaps you didn't know you had show up: the distractor that "sounds right", the rule that interacts with another rule, the case where context changes the answer. It's where genuine fluency is built.

The Hard difficulty tag marks upper-intermediate to advanced challenges — typically B2 and above. Interacting rules, edge cases, plausible distractors, and contexts that require genuine understanding rather than surface pattern-matching.
