Help the film student format their script review. Select ALL the sentences that correctly follow either standard American (US) or standard British (UK) quotation mark rules.
The correct answers are The director shouted, "I told you to say, 'Action!'" (US style) and The director shouted, 'I told you to say, "Action!"' (UK style).
In American English, double quotation marks ("...") are used for primary quotes, and single quotation marks ('...') are used for nested quotes (quotes inside quotes).
In British English, this is traditionally reversed: single marks for the primary quote and double marks for the nested quote.
You should never use the same type of quotation mark for both the inner and outer quotes, as it confuses the reader!
