You already know words like *but*, *so*, *because*, and *however*. Those are discourse markers — small words or phrases that connect ideas and show your listener (or reader) how one thought relates to the next. At B1–B2 level, it's time to move beyond the basics and start using markers that make your English sound more natural, more precise, and more like what a confident speaker actually says.

## What discourse markers really do

Think of them as signposts. They don't change the grammar of your sentence; they change *how your audience processes it*. Compare:

> *She studied hard. She failed the exam.*

> *She studied hard. **Even so**, she failed the exam.*

The facts are identical. But *even so* tells the listener: "What comes next is surprising given what you just heard." That's the job — managing expectations, signalling attitude, shifting topic, or softening a statement.

## Key markers and how to use them

**Concession & contrast:** *nevertheless*, *even so*, *having said that*, *mind you*, *that said*

- *The hotel was overpriced. **That said**, the location was perfect.* ✅
- *The hotel was overpriced. **That said**, the hotel was expensive.* ❌ — You can't concede and then repeat the same point. *That said* must introduce a contrasting idea.

**Adding or reinforcing:** *what's more*, *on top of that*, *as a matter of fact*, *indeed*

- *He didn't just forget my birthday. **On top of that**, he borrowed my car without asking.*

**Reformulating (saying it another way):** *in other words*, *that is to say*, *put differently*

- *The company is downsizing — **in other words**, people are losing their jobs.*

**Dismissing or downplaying:** *at any rate*, *anyway*, *in any case*

- *I'm not sure the data is accurate. **At any rate**, let's move on to the next point.* — Here *at any rate* signals: "Whether or not that's true, it doesn't matter for what I'm about to say."

**Returning to a topic:** *as I was saying*, *going back to…*, *to return to my point*

These are especially common in spoken English and presentations, and learners tend to underuse them.

## The mistake that trips everyone up

The single most common error at this level is **using a discourse marker that points in the wrong logical direction**. Learners often treat *moreover*, *furthermore*, *nevertheless*, and *however* as interchangeable "formal linking words." They are not.

> *The restaurant was noisy. **Moreover**, the food was delicious.* ❌

*Moreover* means "and here's another thing in the same direction." But noise (negative) and delicious food (positive) go in opposite directions. You need *nevertheless*, *even so*, or *however*:

> *The restaurant was noisy. **Nevertheless**, the food was delicious.* ✅

If you're ever unsure, ask yourself: "Does my next sentence push the same way, or does it push against what I just said?" Same direction → *moreover, furthermore, on top of that*. Opposite direction → *however, nevertheless, even so, that said*.

## Register matters

Some markers belong almost exclusively to speech: *mind you*, *anyway*, *thing is*. Others feel stiff in casual conversation: *furthermore*, *that is to say*. Using *furthermore* in a chat with a friend sounds odd; using *mind you* in an academic essay sounds out of place. Match the marker to the situation.

One more subtlety: **position in the sentence**. Many advanced markers can move around. *However* can start a sentence, appear mid-sentence after the subject, or even come at the end:

- **However**, the results were inconclusive.
- The results, **however**, were inconclusive.
- The results were inconclusive, **however**.

All three are correct, but mid-sentence *however* (set off by commas) often reads as the most polished in formal writing. Learners almost always put it first — which is fine, just predictable.

Start experimenting with two or three new markers at a time. Drop them into your writing, check the logical direction, and check the register. That's genuinely all it takes.

Mastering Double Passive Constructions

Why repeat yourself when you can drop words to create elegant, concise sentences? Test your advanced grammar skills on **gapping**, **verb phrase (VP) ellipsis**, and **right node raising** across 10 challenging questions.
> See a quick refresher inside!

When you join two (or more) clauses with *and*, *but*, or *or*, you often don't need to repeat words that are identical in both parts. Dropping those repeated words is called **ellipsis in coordination**, and native speakers do it constantly. Learning to do it well makes your English sound less robotic and more natural.

## The basic idea

Look at this sentence:

> *Tom likes coffee and Tom likes tea.*

Nobody talks like that. We instinctively cut the repeated subject and verb:

> *Tom likes coffee and tea.*

The deleted material (*Tom likes*) is recoverable — a listener can mentally fill it back in from the first clause. That recoverability is the whole engine behind ellipsis: if the reader or listener can reconstruct what's missing, you can leave it out.

This works with subjects, verbs, objects, and even longer stretches:

> *Sarah can speak French and ~~Sarah can speak~~ German.* → **Sarah can speak French and German.**

> *We visited Paris in June and ~~we visited~~ Rome in July.* → **We visited Paris in June and Rome in July.**

> *He wanted to help but couldn't ~~help~~.* → **He wanted to help but couldn't.**

Notice that in the last example the main verb *help* is dropped after the modal *couldn't*. This is perfectly normal and very common after modals (*can, could, will, should, might*).

## When ellipsis works — and when it doesn't

The key condition is that the omitted words must be **exactly the same** in both clauses (same form, same reference). Compare:

> ✅ *She was singing and ~~she was~~ dancing.* — Same subject, same auxiliary. Fine.

> ❌ *She was singing and he dancing.* — Different subjects, so dropping *was* leaves the second clause without its own auxiliary. You need: *She was singing and he was dancing.*

Actually, that second sentence is sometimes heard in literary or formal English (*She was singing and he dancing*), but at B1–B2 level, treat it as unsafe. Stick to cutting only what is truly shared.

Another important restriction: **don't delete material that would change the meaning**. Consider:

> *I told my brother and ~~I told~~ my friend.* → *I told my brother and my friend.*

This now looks like you told both people at the same time (one act of telling, two recipients). If you actually told them separately, the ellipsis subtly shifts the meaning. Context usually rescues you, but be aware of it.

## The mistake B1–B2 learners make most often

Learners tend to **repeat too much** rather than too little. They write sentences like:

> *Maria enjoys reading books and Maria enjoys watching films.*

A native reader finds this heavy. The natural version is:

> *Maria enjoys reading books and watching films.*

The opposite error — cutting too aggressively — is rarer but trickier. For example:

> ❌ *Jake has visited Spain and will Portugal.*

Here a student might try to shorten it to *Jake has visited Spain and will Portugal*, which collapses because *will* needs its own verb. The two verb phrases use different auxiliaries (*has visited* vs. *will visit*), so you can't delete *visit* from the second one without leaving a gap. Keep both verbs:

> ✅ *Jake has visited Spain and will visit Portugal.*

## A quick test you can apply

Before you delete a word, try reading the sentence with the gap filled back in. If the restored version matches what you mean — same subject, same verb form, same tense — the ellipsis is safe. If anything shifts (different tense, different subject, different meaning), keep the words in.

One last thing worth noticing: ellipsis after *but* and *or* follows the same rules as after *and*.

> *You can take the bus or ~~you can~~ walk.* → *You can take the bus or walk.*

> *He studied hard but ~~he~~ failed the exam.* → *He studied hard but failed the exam.*

In that second sentence, only the subject *he* is dropped because the rest of the verb phrase (*failed the exam*) is different from the first clause. The verb *studied* stays in its clause; *failed* stays in its clause. Only the duplicate subject goes.

Get comfortable with this, and your writing and speaking will immediately feel more fluent — not because you're adding anything, but because you're learning what to leave out.

Ellipsis in Coordination

Do you know why we say **Never have I seen...** instead of **I have never seen...**? Learn how to add dramatic flair to your English by mastering **negative adverbial inversion**, **locative fronting**, and **inverted conditionals**.
> See a quick refresher inside!

In normal English word order, the subject comes before the verb: *She had never seen such a mess.* Fronting and inversion shake that order up — deliberately — to create emphasis, surprise, or a more literary tone. Understanding how they work will make you sound more confident in writing and help you decode sentences that otherwise feel backwards.

## What fronting and inversion actually do

**Fronting** means moving a word or phrase to the front of the sentence for emphasis. **Inversion** means flipping the subject and the auxiliary verb (or adding one) so the sentence still works grammatically. They often go hand in hand: when you front a negative or restrictive adverb, inversion is usually required.

Compare these two sentences:

> *I have never felt so embarrassed.* (normal order)
> ***Never have I felt so embarrassed.*** (fronted negative adverb + inversion)

The second version is dramatic — you might hear it in a speech or read it in a novel. Notice that the auxiliary *have* jumps in front of the subject *I*. That inversion is not optional here. If you write *"Never I have felt so embarrassed,"* it's wrong.

## When inversion is triggered

Inversion kicks in after certain words and phrases placed at the start of a sentence. The most common triggers:

- **Negative/restrictive adverbs:** *never, rarely, seldom, hardly, scarcely, barely, no sooner, not only, at no time, under no circumstances, in no way, little*
- **"Only" expressions:** *only then, only after, only when, only by*
- **"So/such … that" for emphasis:** *So bright was the light that I couldn't open my eyes.*
- **"Not until":** *Not until the rain stopped did we leave the building.*

Look at this pair:

> ***Rarely does he arrive on time.*** ✅
> *Rarely he arrives on time.* ❌

After *rarely*, you need the auxiliary *does* before the subject. The main verb then goes back to its base form (*arrive*, not *arrives*).

One more, with *not only … but also*:

> ***Not only did she pass the exam, but she also got the highest mark.*** ✅

Here *did* appears before *she* because *not only* is fronted. The second clause (*but she also got…*) keeps normal word order — inversion only applies to the clause that starts with the trigger.

## When inversion does NOT happen

Fronting doesn't always require inversion. If you move an object or complement forward without a negative/restrictive word, the subject-verb order usually stays the same:

> ***This book** I really enjoyed.* (fronted object, no inversion needed)
> ***Angry** though she was, she said nothing.* (fronted adjective in a concessive clause — inversion is optional and slightly formal)

Also, in *if*-clauses and relative clauses, these negative adverbs sit in the middle of the sentence and do NOT trigger inversion:

> *She said that never **had she** been so tired.* ✅ (inversion in reported speech after *never* — still at the front of its own clause)
> *He is someone who rarely complains.* ✅ (no inversion — *rarely* is not fronted)

## The mistake B1–B2 learners make most

The single most common error is forgetting to invert — or inverting the wrong part. Learners often write:

> *Not only she was late, but she also forgot the tickets.* ❌

The fix: insert the auxiliary before the subject and adjust the main verb.

> ***Not only was she late, but she also forgot the tickets.*** ✅

A close second is inverting both clauses in a *not only … but also* structure. Only the *not only* clause inverts. The *but also* clause stays normal.

One last trap: with *hardly/scarcely … when* and *no sooner … than*, learners mix up the linking words. Remember the pairs — *hardly … when*, *no sooner … than*:

> ***Hardly had we sat down when the phone rang.*** ✅
> *Hardly had we sat down than the phone rang.* ❌

Get the trigger word, the inversion, and the linking word right, and these structures will feel natural surprisingly quickly.

An it-cleft sentence takes a single idea and splits it into two clauses to put a spotlight on one piece of information. The basic frame is:

**It + be + focused element + that/who/which clause**

Take an ordinary sentence: *Maria fixed the printer on Monday.* You can cleft it several ways depending on what you want to emphasize:

- *It was **Maria** who fixed the printer on Monday.* (focus on the person)
- *It was **the printer** that Maria fixed on Monday.* (focus on the object)
- *It was **on Monday** that Maria fixed the printer.* (focus on the time)

Notice that the rest of the sentence — everything that isn't spotlighted — goes into the clause after *that/who/which*. The structure itself isn't hard, but two areas cause real trouble at B1–B2 level: **subject–verb agreement** and **clefting adverbials**.

## Agreement: which verb agrees with what?

The verb **be** after *it* agrees with the **tense and context**, not with the focused element. *It* is always singular, so you write *it **was***, *it **is***, never ~~it were~~ (unless you're in a subjunctive context, which is rare here). That part is straightforward.

The trickier agreement happens inside the relative clause. Look at these two sentences:

✅ *It is **the students** who **are** responsible for the project.*
❌ *It is the students who **is** responsible for the project.*

The verb in the relative clause (*are*) must agree with the focused noun (*the students*), not with *it*. Many learners automatically write *is* because their eye is still on *It is…* at the start. Train yourself to look at the noun right before *who/that* — that noun controls the verb that follows.

One more pair to compare:

✅ *It was **I** who **was** late.* (formal; some speakers accept *who were late* by analogy with *I were* in subjunctive, but in standard clefts, *was* is normal)
❌ *It was me who **were** late.*

In everyday English you'll hear *It was me who was late*, with the object pronoun. Exams and formal writing prefer *I*, but either way the relative-clause verb stays **was** because the reference is to a single person.

## Clefting adverbials

You can focus not just on nouns but on adverbial phrases — of time, place, reason, or manner. When you do this, the connector is almost always **that**, not *when*, *where*, or *why*:

✅ *It was **in 1969** that humans first landed on the Moon.*
❌ *It was in 1969 **when** humans first landed on the Moon.*

The *when* version feels logical ("1969 is a time, so use *when*"), and that's exactly why so many learners choose it. But in a standard it-cleft the relative word is **that** — or you can drop it entirely: *It was in 1969 humans first landed on the Moon.* The same principle applies to place and reason:

✅ *It was **at the café** that we met, not at the library.*
❌ *It was at the café **where** we met.*

## The mistake to watch for

The single most common error is mixing up two jobs at once: using *when/where* inside an it-cleft **and** breaking agreement. A sentence like ~~*It is on weekends when the shops is crowded*~~ has both problems. Fix it in two steps: switch *when* → *that*, then check agreement (*the shops* → *are*):

✅ *It is **on weekends** that the shops **are** crowded.*

## A quick self-check

Before you move on to the quiz, try clefting this sentence three different ways — focusing on the person, the object, and the time:

*Tom sent the email yesterday.*

If you got *It was Tom who sent the email yesterday*, *It was the email that Tom sent yesterday*, and *It was yesterday that Tom sent the email*, you're ready.

Some verbs and adjectives in English don't work alone — they need a specific preposition to connect them to the noun that follows. The tricky part? You can't guess which preposition to use based on logic or translation from your own language. You simply have to learn the combination as a unit.

**Prepositional verbs** are verbs that are always followed by a particular preposition before their object. Think of *depend on*, *listen to*, *apologise for*, *believe in*, *belong to*. The preposition is fixed. You can't swap it for another one and still sound natural.

Compare these two sentences:

- ✅ *She apologised **for** arriving late.*
- ❌ *She apologised **about** arriving late.*

Both might feel logical, but only *apologise for* is correct. A German speaker might want to say *apologise by*, a Spanish speaker *apologise of* — none of those work either. The verb and its preposition travel together.

Here's another pair:

- ✅ *I'm not used to **waiting** in long queues.*
- ❌ *I'm not used to **wait** in long queues.*

Because *to* here is a preposition (not part of an infinitive), the verb after it takes the *-ing* form. This catches a lot of learners off guard — more on that below.

**Prepositional adjectives** follow the same principle. Certain adjectives demand a specific preposition when they link to a noun or gerund: *afraid of*, *interested in*, *good at*, *responsible for*, *different from*. Again, the preposition is non-negotiable.

- ✅ *He's very good **at** solving problems.*
- ❌ *He's very good **in** solving problems.*

Many learners say *good in* because their first language uses something equivalent. English doesn't. It's *good at*.

One more to watch:

- ✅ *This answer is different **from** what I expected.*
- ✅ *This answer is different **to** what I expected.* (common in British English)
- ❌ *This answer is different **of** what I expected.*

So *different* actually accepts *from* or *to* depending on dialect — but never *of*. Not every combination is as strict as it first appears, and that's worth knowing too.

## The biggest trap: preposition + verb form

When a preposition is followed by a verb, that verb must be in the *-ing* form. Always. This rule is absolute, and it's the single most common mistake at this level.

- ✅ *She insisted on **paying** for dinner.*
- ❌ *She insisted on **pay** for dinner.*
- ✅ *I'm tired of **explaining** this.*
- ❌ *I'm tired of **to explain** this.*

The confusion usually comes from *to*. Learners see *to* and automatically reach for the infinitive: *I look forward to see you.* But *look forward to* is a prepositional verb — *to* is the preposition, not the infinitive marker. So it must be *I look forward to **seeing** you.*

A useful test: if you can replace the verb with a noun and the sentence still makes grammatical sense, *to* is a preposition. *I look forward to the weekend* → *to* is clearly a preposition here → so it's *I look forward to **seeing** you*, not *to see*.

## Common errors at a glance

- *Depend of* → **depend on**
- *Interested for* → **interested in**
- *Consist in* → **consist of**
- *Married with* → **married to**
- *Afraid from* → **afraid of**

These mistakes almost always come from translating directly. The fix isn't a rule you can apply — it's deliberate memorisation. When you learn a new verb or adjective, learn its preposition at the same time, as if they were one word. Write *rely on* in your notebook, not just *rely*. Practise them in full sentences so the combination sticks in your ear, not just on a list.

## Why Prepositions in Idioms Don't Follow "Normal" Rules

Most of the time, you can guess a preposition by thinking about its basic meaning — *on* the table, *in* the box, *at* the door. But English is full of fixed expressions where the preposition doesn't follow logic. You simply have to learn the whole phrase as a unit, the way you'd learn a single vocabulary word.

Take the expression **by accident**. There's no spatial or directional reason for *by* here — it's just the preposition English locked into centuries ago. If you try to reason it out, you might reach for *on accident* or *with accident*, and both sound wrong to a native ear (though *on accident* is creeping into informal American English, it's still considered non-standard in most contexts).

The practical rule: **when a preposition is part of an idiomatic expression, treat the whole phrase as one item. Don't swap the preposition based on translation from your language.**

## Worked Examples

Consider these two sentences:

> ✅ She succeeded **in** convincing the whole team.
> ❌ She succeeded **to** convincing the whole team.

Many learners write *succeeded to* because in their first language the equivalent verb takes something like "to." But in English, **succeed** always pairs with **in** when followed by an action.

Here's another:

> ✅ He insisted **on** paying for dinner.
> ❌ He insisted **in** paying for dinner.

Spanish and Portuguese speakers especially fall into this trap, because *insistir en* maps onto *in* in their minds. English wants **insist on**.

One more, because this one catches almost everyone:

> ✅ I'm not used **to** waking up early.
> ❌ I'm not used **of** waking up early.

**Be used to** (meaning "be accustomed to") is a fixed combination. The *to* here is a preposition, not part of an infinitive — that's why a gerund (*waking*) follows it, not a bare verb.

## Expressions That Look Alike but Aren't

Some idioms differ by just one preposition, and the meaning shifts completely:

- **in time** = early enough ("We arrived *in time* for the opening.")
- **on time** = at the scheduled moment ("The train left *on time*.")

- **by the way** = incidentally, introducing a side topic
- **in the way** = blocking, obstructing ("Your suitcase is *in the way*.")

Mixing these up doesn't just sound odd — it changes what you're saying. A learner who writes *"Don't worry, we'll get there in time"* is saying something genuinely different from *"we'll get there on time,"* and both are correct English — just not interchangeable.

## The Mistake B1–B2 Learners Make Most

The single biggest error at this level is **translating the preposition directly from your native language**. French speakers write *depend of* (from *dépendre de*) instead of **depend on**. German speakers write *wait on* (from *warten auf*) instead of **wait for**. Arabic speakers write *afraid from* instead of **afraid of**.

The fix isn't a grammar rule — it's a study habit. Every time you learn a new verb or adjective that takes a preposition, **write down the whole chunk**: *apologize for*, *consist of*, *interested in*, *responsible for*, *good at*. Quiz yourself on the preposition, not just the main word.

A short list of expressions that trip up learners at this level, worth memorizing outright:

- **on purpose** (not *by purpose* or *with purpose*)
- **for a change** (not *to a change*)
- **at risk** (not *in risk*)
- **in charge of** (not *in charge for*)
- **by heart** (not *from heart* or *by the heart*)

If you get the preposition wrong in one of these, a native speaker will still understand you — but it immediately marks the sentence as non-native. Getting them right is one of the fastest ways to sound more natural.

## How present tenses talk about the future

English has no single "future tense" in the way some languages do. Instead, speakers regularly use **present tenses** — both the **present simple** and the **present continuous** — to talk about future events. The key is knowing which one fits and why.

**Present simple for future** = scheduled, timetabled, or fixed external events. Think of things controlled by an institution, a calendar, or a system — not by you personally.

> ✅ The train **leaves** at 6:45 tomorrow morning.
> ❌ The train **is going to leave** at 6:45 tomorrow morning.

Both sentences are grammatically possible, but native speakers almost always choose the present simple here because a train schedule is a fixed, published arrangement. Using *going to* or *will* sounds odd — as if the train has made a personal decision.

**Present continuous for future** = personal arrangements that are already confirmed. Someone has made a plan, and the time or place is usually known.

> ✅ I**'m meeting** Sarah at the airport on Friday.
> ❌ I **meet** Sarah at the airport on Friday.

The present simple version sounds like this is a recurring schedule (maybe you meet Sarah at the airport every Friday as part of your job). The continuous version tells us it's a one-off arrangement you've both agreed on.

## Choosing between the two

A useful test: **Who or what controls the event?**

- An **external system** (timetable, calendar, programme, itinerary) → present simple.
*The conference starts at 9 a.m. / The shop closes at midnight on Saturdays.*

- A **person or group** who has arranged something → present continuous.
*We're flying to Rome next Tuesday. / She's having dinner with her boss tonight.*

There's a grey area. A sentence like *The wedding is on Saturday* uses the present simple because it feels like a fixed date on a calendar, not a personal arrangement in progress. But *We're getting married on Saturday* uses the continuous because it foregrounds the people involved and their plan.

## The mistake that catches most learners

B1–B2 learners tend to **overuse "will"** for plans and schedules, producing sentences like:

> ❌ My flight **will depart** at 14:30.
> ✅ My flight **departs** at 14:30.

> ❌ I **will have** lunch with Tom tomorrow — we already booked the restaurant.
> ✅ I**'m having** lunch with Tom tomorrow — we already booked the restaurant.

*Will* is fine for predictions, promises, and spontaneous decisions, but it sounds wrong for events that are already fixed or arranged. If the plan is settled, reach for a present tense instead of *will*.

A second common slip is using the present continuous for things that are clearly timetabled rather than personally arranged:

> ❌ The museum **is opening** at 10 a.m. every day next week.
> ✅ The museum **opens** at 10 a.m. every day next week.

The museum's hours aren't someone's personal diary entry — they're a published schedule, so the present simple is the natural choice.

## Edge cases worth knowing

- **Time clauses** (after *when*, *before*, *as soon as*, *until*, *by the time*) always take the present simple for future meaning, never *will*:
  > ✅ I'll call you **when I arrive**.
  > ❌ I'll call you **when I will arrive**.

- Some verbs that describe events rather than activities — *start, begin, end, finish, open, close, arrive, land* — lean heavily toward the present simple for future reference, even in informal speech. You'll rarely hear *The film is beginning at 8* from a native speaker; *The film begins at 8* is far more natural.

- If an arrangement is still tentative ("We're thinking about…"), the present continuous for future doesn't apply — use *might*, *may*, or *thinking of + -ing* instead. The present continuous signals something definite.

Keep it simple: **timetable → present simple; personal plan already made → present continuous; neither → probably *will* or *going to*.**

## What Wh-Cleft Sentences Do

A **wh-cleft sentence** splits a simple sentence into two parts using a *wh-*clause (usually starting with *what*) and the verb *be*. The purpose is to put a spotlight on one piece of information — the part you really want the listener to notice.

Take a plain sentence:

> *I need more time.*

Now reshape it as a wh-cleft:

> *What I need is more time.*

The meaning hasn't changed, but the emphasis has. The *what*-clause ("what I need") sets up a kind of question in the listener's mind, and the second half ("more time") delivers the answer with extra weight.

## Three Patterns You Need to Know

**Standard wh-cleft** — the *what*-clause comes first:

> *What surprised me was her honesty.*

**Reversed wh-cleft** — the focused element comes first, and the *what*-clause follows:

> *Her honesty was what surprised me.*

Both sentences highlight *her honesty*, but the reversed version sounds more natural in conversation, especially when you're reacting to something someone just said.

**Action-focus wh-cleft** — when the spotlight falls on an action, use *what … do/did … is/was* + a bare infinitive or *to*-infinitive:

> ✅ *What she did was (to) call the police.*

This structure emphasises the action itself — *calling the police* — rather than who did it or when.

## Worked Examples and Common Traps

Look at these pairs carefully:

> ✅ *What I like about this city is the architecture.*
> ❌ *What I like about this city is like the architecture.*

The verb *be* already connects the two halves. Learners sometimes repeat the main verb after *is/was* because the sentence feels incomplete — it isn't. The *what*-clause contains the verb; the second half just names the focused element.

Now an action-focus example:

> ✅ *What he did was resign from the committee.*
> ❌ *What he did was resigned from the committee.*

After *what … did … was*, the verb that follows should be a **bare infinitive** (*resign*) or *to resign* — never a past-tense form. The tense is already carried by *did* and *was*; doubling it with *resigned* is the single most frequent mistake at this level.

## When to Use (and When Not to Bother)

Wh-clefts work best when you want to **correct, clarify, or contrast**:

> *I don't need advice. What I need is practical help.*

They also appear constantly in spoken English when someone is explaining or justifying:

> *What happened was the train got cancelled.*

Don't force a wh-cleft when the sentence has no particular focus. "What I ate was breakfast" sounds odd because there's nothing surprising or contrastive about eating breakfast. The structure only earns its place when one element genuinely deserves the spotlight.

## Edge Cases Worth Knowing

**Plural subjects after *what*.** The verb *be* can be singular or plural depending on the focused element, but in practice most speakers use a singular verb:

> *What we need is new ideas.* (common, natural)
> *What we need are new ideas.* (grammatically strict, rarer)

Both are accepted; exams typically allow either.

**Other wh-words.** Although *what* dominates, you'll occasionally meet *where*, *when*, or *the reason (why)*:

> *The reason I'm late is that the bus broke down.*
> *Where I feel happiest is at home.*

These follow the same logic — wh-clause sets up, *be* connects, focused element lands.

**The thing / All construction.** Informal English often replaces *what* with *the thing* or *all*:

> *The thing is, nobody told me.*
> *All I want is a quiet evening.*

These are essentially wh-clefts in disguise and behave the same way.

One final reminder: in action-focus clefts, resist the urge to match tenses across both halves. The *what*-clause carries the tense; the complement after *was/is* stays in the base form. Get that right and the rest falls into place.

Do you know when to use a semicolon before **however**, or when to drop **though** at the end of a sentence? Master the tricky punctuation and placement of **contrast clauses** by navigating savage restaurant reviews, passive-aggressive roommate notes, and clumsy burglars.
> See a quick refresher inside!

## How These Words Work

**Although**, **though**, and **however** all express contrast — they tell the reader that two ideas don't fit together the way you'd expect. The tricky part is that they don't all work the same way grammatically, and mixing up their punctuation or position is one of the most common mistakes at this level.

**Although** and **though** are conjunctions. They connect two clauses inside the same sentence. **However** is a linking adverb. It connects two *separate* sentences (or two independent clauses joined by a semicolon). This single difference controls almost everything about punctuation and word order.

## Although and Though — Inside One Sentence

Use **although** or **though** to introduce a contrast clause that attaches to a main clause. The contrast clause can come first or second:

> ✅ Although the restaurant was expensive, the food was disappointing.
> ✅ The food was disappointing although the restaurant was expensive.

When the **although/though** clause comes first, put a comma after it. When it comes second, a comma is usually optional (many writers skip it).

**Though** is slightly less formal than **although**, but in most writing and speaking they're interchangeable. One difference: **though** can go at the end of a sentence as an afterthought, almost like "but." **Although** cannot.

> ✅ The hotel was noisy. The beds were comfortable, though.
> ❌ The hotel was noisy. The beds were comfortable, although.

## However — Between Two Sentences

**However** does not glue two clauses together the way **although** does. It comments on the relationship between two independent statements. That means it needs a full stop or semicolon before it, and a comma after it:

> ✅ The exam was difficult. However, most students passed.
> ✅ The exam was difficult; however, most students passed.

Compare with the conjunction version:

> ✅ Although the exam was difficult, most students passed.

All three sentences above mean roughly the same thing — but the grammar is different.

## The Mistake Almost Everyone Makes

The single most frequent error is using **however** as if it were **although** — sticking it between two clauses with just a comma:

> ❌ The weather was terrible, however we decided to go hiking.

This creates a **comma splice** (two full sentences glued with only a comma). Fix it in one of three ways:

1. Replace the comma with a full stop: *The weather was terrible. However, we decided to go hiking.*
2. Replace the comma with a semicolon: *The weather was terrible; however, we decided to go hiking.*
3. Switch to a conjunction: *Although the weather was terrible, we decided to go hiking.*

Another common slip is doubling the contrast — using **although** and **but** in the same sentence, which cancels itself out:

> ❌ Although she studied hard, but she failed the test.
> ✅ Although she studied hard, she failed the test.
> ✅ She studied hard, but she failed the test.

Pick one or the other. **Although** already does the job of **but**; you don't need both.

## Position Flexibility

**However** can move around within its own sentence. Wherever it lands, set it off with commas:

> ✅ The train was late. The passengers, however, remained calm.
> ✅ The train was late. The passengers remained calm, however.

**Although** and **though** stay at the front of their own clause — they can't float to the middle the way **however** can. (Remember the one exception: **though** alone can sit at the end of a sentence as an informal afterthought.)

A quick mental test: if you can replace the word with **but** and keep one sentence, use **although/though**. If you need two sentences, use **however**.

## How These Clauses Work

An **adverb clause of time** tells you *when* something happens. It starts with a time word — **when**, **before**, **after**, or **until** — followed by a subject and a verb, and it attaches to a main clause. Together, the two clauses form one complete sentence.

> **After she finished the exam**, she went straight home.

The bolded part is the adverb clause. It can't stand alone — it needs the main clause (*she went straight home*) to make a complete thought. You can also flip the order:

> She went straight home **after she finished the exam**.

When the adverb clause comes first, put a **comma** before the main clause. When it comes second, you usually don't need one. This comma rule applies to all four conjunctions.

## Tense Pairing — The Big Rule

Here is the single most important thing on this page: **when you talk about the future, the adverb clause uses a present tense, not** `will`.

English treats the time clause as something that is "set" — it marks the moment, so `will` is unnecessary inside it. The future meaning lives in the main clause.

> ✅ I'll call you **when I arrive**.
> ❌ I'll call you **when I will arrive**.

> ✅ **Before the store closes**, we need to buy milk.
> ❌ **Before the store will close**, we need to buy milk.

This applies equally to **after** and **until**:

> ✅ She's going to wait **until the rain stops**.
> ❌ She's going to wait **until the rain will stop**.

If both events are in the past, both clauses simply use past tenses — no special rule needed:

> When the lights went out, everyone screamed.

## Choosing the Right Conjunction

Each word frames the timeline differently:

- **When** — at the moment something happens (or around that time).
- **Before** — earlier than the event in the clause.
- **After** — later than the event in the clause.
- **Until** — from now continuously up to the moment the event happens.

Pay attention to **until**, because it implies an ongoing state that ends at a specific point:

> ✅ Don't open the oven **until the timer goes off**.

This means "keep the oven closed from now right up to the moment the timer sounds." Replacing *until* with *when* would change the meaning — *when* would simply mark the moment, not the stretch of time leading up to it.

## Common Mistakes at B1–B2

**1. Using `will` in the time clause (future contexts).**
This is by far the most frequent error, and it comes from translating directly out of languages where the future marker appears in both clauses. Train yourself: see *when / before / after / until* + a future situation → use **present simple** (or present perfect) in that clause, never *will*.

**2. Confusing *until* with *by the time*.**
*Until* describes duration ("keep doing X up to this point"). *By the time* highlights a deadline or a completed result. Compare:

> ✅ I'll be studying **until you get home**. (continuous action that stops at that moment)
> ✅ **By the time you get home**, I'll have finished studying. (result complete at that moment)

Swapping one for the other changes what you're saying.

**3. Missing or adding commas incorrectly.**
Clause first → comma. Main clause first → generally no comma. A misplaced comma won't destroy meaning, but it looks unpolished and can slow the reader down.

**4. Using present perfect where present simple is enough.**
Both are grammatically possible in future time clauses, but they signal different things:

> ✅ **After I finish** this chapter, I'll take a break. (sequence: finish, then break)
> ✅ **After I've finished** this chapter, I'll take a break. (emphasis on completion before the next action)

Neither is wrong, but if you're unsure, present simple is the safer, more natural choice at this level.

Keep these points in mind as you work through the questions, and remember: the time clause sets the scene — let the main clause carry the `will`.

> See a quick refresher inside!

## The Big Three: Be, Do, and Have

The verbs *be*, *do*, and *have* are the foundation of English grammar. They are unique because they frequently act as both main verbs (showing a state or possession) and auxiliary (helper) verbs used to build questions, negatives, and other tenses.

Because they are irregular, their forms change based on two things: the time of the action (present or past) and the subject of the sentence (I, you, he/she/it, we, they).

## Matching the Subject and Time

To use these verbs correctly, you must match them to their subject. This is called subject-verb agreement.

**The verb "to be"** is the only English verb with three present forms and two past forms:
*   Present: *am* (I), *is* (he/she/it), *are* (you/we/they)
*   Past: *was* (I/he/she/it), *were* (you/we/they)

✅ The band members were completely out of tune last night.
❌ The band members was completely out of tune last night. *(The subject "band members" is plural, so we must use "were".)*

**The verbs "to have" and "to do"** change based on the subject in the present tense, but they are identical for all subjects in the past tense:
*   Present: *has / does* (he/she/it), *have / do* (I/you/we/they)
* Past: *had / did* (all subjects)

✅ Before the storm, Captain Redbeard had a magnificent ship.
❌ Before the storm, Captain Redbeard has a magnificent ship. *(The context is in the past, so the present tense "has" is incorrect.)*

## Forming Negatives and Questions

When making negative statements or asking questions in the present and past simple tenses, *do* and *have* usually need help. We use the helper verb *do/does/did* + *not* + the base verb.

✅ My fancy new cat doesn't like the salmon treats.
❌ My fancy new cat don't like the salmon treats. *(A cat is a singular "it", so we need "doesn't".)*

The verb *to be* is independent. It does not need a helper verb to form questions or negatives. You simply swap the subject and the verb, or add *not* directly after it.

✅ Were you in the kitchen this morning?
❌ Did you be in the kitchen this morning?

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

**The "Double Past" Error**
When you use *did* to ask a question or make a negative sentence in the past tense, *did* already shows the past time. The main verb that follows must stay in its base form. A very common mistake is putting both verbs in the past tense.

✅ Did you take my chocolate donut yesterday?
❌ Did you took my chocolate donut yesterday?

**The "You Was" Trap**
Even though the pronoun *you* can refer to just one single person, it always takes the plural verb forms. Never use *was*, *has*, or *does* with *you*.

✅ Where were you last night?
❌ Where was you last night?

## How Adverbs Change for Comparison

Adjectives aren't the only words that shift form when you compare things — adverbs do it too. When you want to say that someone does something **more** (or **most**) than someone else, you need comparative and superlative adverbs.

The core pattern depends on the adverb's length:

- **Short adverbs** (one syllable, like *fast*, *hard*, *loud*) add **-er** for comparatives and **-est** for superlatives — just like short adjectives.
- **Longer adverbs** (most two-syllable adverbs and anything ending in **-ly**) use **more** for comparatives and **most** for superlatives.

> ✅ She runs **faster** than her brother.
> ❌ She runs **more fast** than her brother.

> ✅ He explained the problem **more clearly** than the textbook did.
> ❌ He explained the problem **clearlier** than the textbook did.

That second pair is where many learners go wrong: they try to add *-er* to an *-ly* adverb. If the adverb ends in *-ly*, reach for **more / most** instead of changing the ending.

## Irregular Forms You Need to Know

A handful of adverbs don't follow either pattern — they change completely:

| Adverb | Comparative | Superlative |
|--------|------------|-------------|
| well | better | best |
| badly | worse | worst |
| far | farther / further | farthest / furthest |

These are high-frequency words, so memorising them pays off quickly.

> ✅ Maria sings **better** than I do.
> ❌ Maria sings **more well** than I do.

> ✅ Of all the students, Kenji performed **worst** on the listening section.
> ❌ Of all the students, Kenji performed **most badly** on the listening section.

Both *farther* and *further* are accepted for physical distance in most contexts. In everyday English, *further* is more common, especially in British English.

## Superlatives and "the"

With superlative adverbs, **the** is optional — and in informal speech, it's often dropped:

> ✅ Who arrived **(the) earliest**?
> ✅ She works **(the) most efficiently** in the morning.

This is different from superlative adjectives, where *the* is almost always required (*the tallest building*). With adverbs, both versions sound natural.

## The Mistake That Catches Most Learners

The single most common error at B1–B2 level is **confusing adjective forms with adverb forms** in comparisons. Look at this pair:

> ❌ He drives **more careful** than she does.
> ✅ He drives **more carefully** than she does.

*Careful* is an adjective; it can't modify the verb *drives*. You need the adverb *carefully*, and then its comparative is *more carefully*. Before building the comparative, make sure you're starting with the adverb, not the adjective.

A related trap involves words that look the same as both adjectives and adverbs — *fast*, *hard*, *early*, *late*. Because these already function as adverbs, they take **-er / -est** directly:

> ✅ You need to work **harder**.
> ❌ You need to work **more hardly**.

*Hardly* exists, but it means "almost not" — a completely different word. The adverb form of *hard* (meaning "with effort") is just *hard*.

## Quick Decision Guide

When you need a comparative or superlative adverb, ask yourself two questions:

1. **Is the adverb irregular?** → Use *better / best*, *worse / worst*, or *farther / farthest*.
2. **Does it end in -ly?** → Use *more / most*. Otherwise, add *-er / -est*.

That covers nearly every case you'll meet at this level. Trust the pattern, double-check that you're working with the adverb (not the adjective), and the rest falls into place.

Basics. Comparative and Superlative Adverbs

Did you know that using two negative words in an English sentence is usually a grammatical mistake? Test your ability to choose between **nobody for people**, **nothing for things**, and **nowhere for places**, while learning to avoid tricky **double negatives**.
> See a quick refresher inside!

## What These Words Do

**Nobody**, **nothing**, and **nowhere** are negative words that replace a noun or place in a sentence. They already contain the meaning "not + any," so you don't need to add another negative element. Think of them as shortcuts:

- **nobody** = not anybody / no person
- **nothing** = not anything / no thing
- **nowhere** = not anywhere / no place

They work as subjects, objects, or adverbials, and they make the whole sentence negative on their own.

> ✅ Nobody answered the phone.
> ❌ Nobody didn't answer the phone.

That second sentence has **two** negatives — *nobody* and *didn't* — which cancel each other out in standard English. The sentence accidentally says that everybody answered the phone. This is the single biggest trap with these words.

## Where They Sit in a Sentence

**As a subject** (very common), they take a singular verb:

> ✅ Nothing was left in the fridge.
> ❌ Nothing were left in the fridge.

Even though "nothing" might refer to many items, the verb is always **singular** — *was*, *is*, *has*, never *were*, *are*, *have*.

**As an object**, they come after the verb:

> ✅ I found nothing in my bag.

**As an adverbial of place**, *nowhere* works the same way:

> ✅ We had nowhere to go after the concert.

You can also put these words at the start for emphasis:

> ✅ Nowhere in this city will you find cheaper coffee.

Notice the **inverted word order** (will you, not you will) when *nowhere* opens a sentence like this. The same inversion happens with *nobody* and *nothing* in more formal or emphatic statements, but at B1–B2 level the subject-position use (*Nobody knows*, *Nothing happened*) is far more frequent.

## Choosing Between "Nobody" and "Not Anybody"

Both forms are correct — the difference is mostly about style and position.

> ✅ Nobody called me yesterday.
> ✅ I didn't call anybody yesterday.

Use **nobody / nothing / nowhere** when the negative word is the **subject** — it sounds more natural than "Not anybody called me." Use **not … anybody / anything / anywhere** when the verb is already negative with *don't / didn't / won't*:

> ✅ She doesn't know anything about the project.
> ✅ She knows nothing about the project.

Both are fine. The version with *nothing* can sound slightly more forceful.

## The Mistake That Keeps Coming Back

B1–B2 learners whose first language allows double negatives (Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Arabic, among many others) consistently produce sentences like these:

> ❌ I don't have nothing to say.
> ✅ I have nothing to say.
> ✅ I don't have anything to say.

Pick **one** negative strategy per clause — either the negative word (*nothing*) **or** the negative verb + "any" form (*don't have anything*). Never both.

The same rule applies with **never**:

> ❌ Nobody never told me.
> ✅ Nobody ever told me.
> ✅ No one ever told me.

After *nobody*, *nothing*, or *nowhere*, use **ever**, not *never*, because the negative meaning is already there.

One more detail worth remembering: **nobody** and **no one** mean the same thing. *No one* is slightly more formal and is always written as two words (not ~~noone~~). In everyday speech and writing, either works perfectly.

## What Conditionals Actually Do

A conditional sentence has two halves: a **condition** (the "if" part) and a **result** (what happens because of it). The zero and first conditionals are the two that deal with **real, possible situations** — things that genuinely happen or could genuinely happen. That's what separates them from the second and third conditionals, which deal with imaginary or impossible scenarios.

## The Zero Conditional — Things That Are Always True

Use the zero conditional when the result **always** follows the condition. Think of scientific facts, general truths, and reliable cause-and-effect.

**Pattern: If + present simple, … present simple.**

> ✅ If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.
> ✅ If I drink coffee after 8 p.m., I can't sleep.

Both halves use the **present simple**. The meaning is essentially "every time this happens, that happens." You could swap "if" for "when" and the sentence would still work — that's a good test for whether you need the zero conditional.

> ❌ If you heat water to 100°C, it **will boil**.

That sentence isn't grammatically broken, but it shifts the meaning. Adding **will** implies you're predicting a specific future event rather than stating a general truth. For a science textbook or a piece of advice that's always valid, stick with present simple in both halves.

## The First Conditional — Real Future Possibilities

Use the first conditional when you're talking about a **specific situation in the future** that is possible or likely.

**Pattern: If + present simple, … will + base verb.**

> ✅ If it rains tomorrow, we will cancel the picnic.
> ✅ If you don't hurry, you'll miss the train.

Notice that the **if-clause stays in the present simple** even though the whole sentence is about the future. This is the single most important thing to remember.

> ❌ If it **will rain** tomorrow, we will cancel the picnic.

Putting *will* in the if-clause is one of the most common mistakes at this level. English uses the present simple after "if" to talk about future conditions. It feels strange — you're clearly thinking about tomorrow — but the rule is firm.

## Telling Them Apart

The difference comes down to **always vs. this time**.

- *If I eat too much sugar, I feel sick.* → Zero conditional. This is my general experience, every time.
- *If I eat too much sugar at the party tonight, I'll feel sick.* → First conditional. I'm talking about one specific future event.

When learners mix these up, the sentence doesn't become nonsense — a native speaker would still understand you. But you lose precision, and in writing or exams, that precision matters.

## Common Traps

**1. "Will" creeping into the if-clause.**
This is worth repeating because it's the error that appears most often. Train yourself: see "if," drop "will."

> ❌ If she **will call** me, I will tell her the news.
> ✅ If she **calls** me, I will tell her the news.

**2. Using "when" and "if" interchangeably in the first conditional.**
In the zero conditional, swapping them is usually fine (*When/If you heat ice, it melts*). In the first conditional, the choice matters. "If" signals uncertainty; "when" signals something you expect to happen.

> *If I see Tom, I'll say hello.* → Maybe I'll see him, maybe not.
> *When I see Tom, I'll say hello.* → I'm going to see him; it's just a matter of time.

**3. Forgetting that modals other than "will" can appear in the result clause.**
You can use **can**, **may**, **might**, or **should** in the result half of a first conditional to change the strength of the prediction:

> ✅ If you finish early, you **can** leave.
> ✅ If the traffic is bad, we **might** be late.

These are still first conditionals — the if-clause keeps its present simple, and the result clause uses a modal that points to the future.

## Quick Summary Pattern

| | If-clause | Result clause | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Zero** | present simple | present simple | general truth / habit |
| **First** | present simple | will / modal + base verb | specific future possibility |

Keep the if-clause in the present simple for both. That one habit will eliminate most errors before they start.

## What "countable" and "uncountable" actually means

Every English noun falls into one of two groups, and the difference controls which words you can put around it.

**Countable nouns** are things you can count individually: *one apple, two apples, three apples*. They have a singular form and a plural form, and you can put a number or *a/an* in front of them.

**Uncountable nouns** (also called "mass nouns") name things you treat as a whole mass or concept rather than individual units: *water, information, furniture*. They don't normally take a plural, and you never put *a/an* directly in front of them.

The practical test is simple: can you say "one _____, two _____s" and have it make sense? If yes, the noun is countable. If it sounds strange — "one furniture, two furnitures" — the noun is uncountable.

## How this changes what you write around the noun

The countable/uncountable distinction triggers a chain of grammar choices:

| | Countable | Uncountable |
|---|---|---|
| **a / an** | ✅ *a suggestion* | ❌ *~~an advice~~* |
| **plural -s** | ✅ *three chairs* | ❌ *~~three furnitures~~* |
| **many / few** | ✅ *many questions* | ❌ *~~many information~~* |
| **much / little** | ❌ *~~much question~~* | ✅ *much information* |
| **some / a lot of** | works with both | works with both |

Look at these in full sentences:

> ❌ *She gave me an advice about my CV.*
> ✅ *She gave me some advice about my CV.*

*Advice* is uncountable, so it can't take *an*. If you need to count it, add a countable container: *a piece of advice, two pieces of advice*.

> ❌ *We need to buy new furnitures for the office.*
> ✅ *We need to buy new furniture for the office.*

*Furniture* never takes a plural *-s*. One desk and four chairs together are still just *furniture*. Want to count? Say *two pieces of furniture* or name the individual items.

## The nouns that catch everyone out

Some of the trickiest uncountable nouns are ones that are countable in other languages. Memorise these — they cause the most errors at B1–B2 level:

- **information** (not ~~informations~~)
- **advice** (not ~~advices~~)
- **news** (not ~~a news~~ — *news* looks plural but is uncountable and singular: *The news **is** good.*)
- **luggage / baggage** (not ~~luggages~~)
- **equipment** (not ~~equipments~~)
- **research** (not ~~researches~~ in everyday use)
- **homework** (not ~~homeworks~~)
- **bread** (not ~~a bread~~ — say *a loaf of bread* or *a piece of bread*)

## Nouns that switch sides

Some nouns can be both countable and uncountable, but the meaning shifts:

> ✅ *I'd like **a coffee**, please.* (countable — meaning "a cup of coffee")
> ✅ *I don't like **coffee**.* (uncountable — meaning the substance in general)

> ✅ *She has a lot of **experience** in marketing.* (uncountable — general knowledge)
> ✅ *Living abroad was **an experience** I'll never forget.* (countable — one specific event)

This is completely normal. The key is to notice whether you're talking about the substance/concept in general (uncountable) or a specific, individual instance of it (countable).

## The mistake to fix right now

The single most common error: applying your first language's rules. If your language says *informations* or *advices* or *a furniture*, English simply doesn't — no matter how logical it seems. Rather than trying to reason it out, treat the list above as vocabulary to learn by heart. When you're unsure about a specific noun, check a learner's dictionary: it will mark nouns as **[C]** (countable), **[U]** (uncountable), or **[C, U]** (both). Building this habit now will clean up a surprising number of article, determiner, and subject-verb agreement mistakes all at once.

Test your **Basics: For, Since, and Ago** skills with 12 questions at **easy** level.

## What Each Word Actually Does

**For**, **since**, and **ago** all help you talk about time, but they do different jobs. Mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes at this level, so let's sort them out clearly.

**For** tells you *how long* something lasts. It answers the question "How long?" and is followed by a **duration** — a length of time.

> ✅ I've lived in Berlin **for three years**.

**Since** tells you *when something started*. It answers "From what point?" and is followed by a **specific moment** in the past — a date, a year, a time, or an event.

> ✅ I've lived in Berlin **since 2021**.

**Ago** tells you *how far back* something happened. It goes **after** the time expression and is used with the **past simple**, not the present perfect.

> ✅ I moved to Berlin **three years ago**.

Notice that all three sentences above describe roughly the same situation, but from different angles. That's the key: they aren't interchangeable — each one requires a different kind of time reference and sometimes a different tense.

## For vs. Since — The Mistake Nearly Everyone Makes

The single most frequent error is using **since** with a duration instead of a point in time:

> ❌ I've worked here **since five years**.
> ✅ I've worked here **for five years**.

"Five years" is a duration (how long), so it needs **for**. Compare:

> ✅ I've worked here **since 2019**.

Here, 2019 is a point in time (when it started), so **since** is correct.

A reliable test: can you put "from" in front of the time expression and have it make sense? *From 2019* — yes, use **since**. *From five years* — no, use **for**.

Both **for** and **since** are common with the **present perfect** (have/has + past participle) when the situation is still true now. You can also use **for** with other tenses — *I waited for twenty minutes* (past simple), *I'll be away for a week* (future) — but **since** almost always pairs with a perfect tense.

## Ago — Position and Tense

**Ago** behaves differently from the other two. It comes *after* the time expression, not before it:

> ❌ I started this course **ago two months**.
> ✅ I started this course **two months ago**.

And because **ago** points to a finished moment in the past, it takes the **past simple**:

> ❌ I **have graduated** a year ago.
> ✅ I **graduated** a year ago.

Using the present perfect with **ago** is a very natural mistake — many learners feel that "a year ago" still connects to now. It doesn't, grammatically. **Ago** marks the action as completed and located in past time, so the past simple is required.

## Quick-Reference Contrasts

Sometimes seeing all three side by side in the same context locks the pattern in:

> ✅ She **has known** him **for** ten years.
> ✅ She **has known** him **since** secondary school.
> ✅ She **met** him ten years **ago**.

All three are correct and describe the same relationship, but the grammar around each word is different. Change any piece — swap the tense, move **ago** before the number, put a duration after **since** — and the sentence breaks.

One last edge case worth knowing: **for** can sometimes be dropped in informal speech (*I've been waiting twenty minutes*), but **since** and **ago** can never be dropped. And don't confuse **since** the time word with **since** meaning "because" — context usually makes it obvious, but in grammar exercises, always check whether the sentence is about a reason or a starting point.

Keep these three distinctions sharp — duration, starting point, finished past — and the right word will follow naturally.

Basics. Basic Meanings of the Verb Get

Do you know why we "go to the gym" but "go on a diet"? Test your knowledge of everyday verb collocations by practicing **go to** for places, **go on** for trips, **go for** for noun activities, and **go -ing** for sports and leisure.
> See a quick refresher inside!

The verb *go* is incredibly flexible, but it requires specific prepositions or verb forms depending on the context. Choosing between *go to*, *go on*, *go for*, and *go -ing* is all about categorizing the type of activity or destination you are talking about.

Here is how to know exactly which pattern to use.

## Go to: Destinations
Use **go to** when you are talking about moving toward a specific place or destination. If you can point to it on a map or it is a physical building, you usually need *to*.

* I need to go to the supermarket.
* We will go to Japan next year.
* She goes to the gym every morning.

**The Exception:**
There are a few special places where we drop the *to*. The most common ones are *home*, *downtown*, *abroad*, and *there/here*.
* ✅ I want to go home.
* ❌ I want to go to home.

## Go on: Trips and Events
Use **go on** for organized trips, journeys, and special events. You aren't just traveling to a building; you are participating in an experience.

* We are going on a vacation to the mountains.
* The pirate wants to go on a cruise.
* They decided to go on a date.

You also use **go on** for a few specific lifestyle choices, most notably: *go on a diet* and *go on strike*.

## Go for: Activities as Nouns
Use **go for** when the activity is expressed as a noun, particularly for brief, casual activities or routines that involve movement.

* Let's go for a walk in the forest.
* I usually go for a run in the morning.
* Do you want to go for coffee?

Notice that *a walk* and *a run* are nouns here, not verbs. We use an article (*a*) before them.

## Go + -ing: Sports and Leisure
When an activity ends in *-ing* (a gerund), you attach it directly to the verb *go* with absolutely no prepositions in between. We use this pattern for sports, hobbies, and leisure activities.

* Let's go swimming in the lake.
* I want to go sightseeing in Tokyo.
* We go skiing every winter.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

The most frequent mistake learners make is mixing up the pattern for activities, usually by inserting the word *to* where it doesn't belong.

**Mistake 1: Adding "to" before an -ing activity**
When you use an *-ing* word for a leisure activity, never use *to*.
* ✅ I want to go shopping this weekend.
* ❌ I want to go to shopping this weekend.

**Mistake 2: Using "to" instead of "for" with noun activities**
Remember that *go to* is for places (like a park). If the word describes the activity itself (like a walk), use *go for*.
* ✅ Whenever there is a full moon, I go for a walk.
* ❌ Whenever there is a full moon, I go to a walk.

**A helpful trick:** Sometimes you can express the exact same idea using two different patterns. For example, "I want to go for a swim" (using a noun) and "I want to go swimming" (using an -ing verb) are both perfectly correct. Just make sure you don't mix them together into "go to a swim"!

Do you know the difference between "Do you have?" and "Have you got?" Test your knowledge on expressing possession with **affirmative statements**, **negative forms**, and **questions** using both *have* and *have got*.
> See a quick refresher inside!

## Two Ways to Say the Same Thing

When we talk about owning things, physical characteristics, relationships, or illnesses, English gives us two options: **have** and **have got**.

Both forms mean exactly the same thing. "I have a dog" and "I've got a dog" are identical in meaning. The main difference is regional and stylistic: "have got" is very common in informal British English, while "have" is standard everywhere, especially in American English and formal writing.

The grammar changes depending on which version you choose, especially when you need to say "no" or ask a question.

## Making Negatives and Questions

The verb **have** acts like a normal present tense verb. To make it negative or turn it into a question, you must use the helping verbs **do** or **does**.

**Have got** works differently. Here, "have" is already acting as a helping verb, so you don't need *do* or *does*. You simply move "have/has" to the front for questions, or add "not" for negatives.

**Questions:**
✅ Do you have an aspirin? (Standard *have*)
✅ Have you got an aspirin? (Using *have got*)
❌ Do you have got an aspirin?

**Negatives:**
✅ She doesn't have a car. (Standard *have*)
✅ She hasn't got a car. (Using *have got*)
❌ She hasn't a car.

## When You Cannot Use "Have Got"

While "have" and "have got" are interchangeable for possession, there are two major situations where you **cannot** use "have got":

**1. The Past Tense**
"Have got" is strictly a present tense form. If you want to talk about possession in the past, you must use **had**.
✅ I had a bicycle when I was young.
❌ I had got a bicycle when I was young.

**2. Actions and Experiences**
We often use "have" to describe actions, like *have breakfast*, *have a shower*, *have fun*, or *have a baby*. Because these are actions and not states of possession, you cannot use "got."
✅ I usually have a shower in the morning.
❌ I usually have got a shower in the morning.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

The most frequent mistake learners make is mixing the grammar of the two forms together. You must pick one lane: either use *do/does* with standard "have", or use *have/has* directly with "got". You cannot combine them.

✅ Does he have an umbrella?
❌ Does he got an umbrella?

✅ I haven't got any money.
❌ I don't got any money.

Finally, remember to change the verb for the third-person singular (he, she, it). You must use **has** or **has got**.
✅ The alien has got three eyes.
❌ The alien have got three eyes.

Are you planning a trip or baking a cake and need to ask about the time? Master the structure of **asking about duration**, using the **auxiliary "does"**, and answering with **"it takes"** in this 12-question challenge.
> See a quick refresher inside!

When you want to ask about the amount of time required to do something, English uses a very specific set phrase: **"How long does it take?"**

While it might seem tempting to translate directly from your native language and ask things like "How much time need?", the "take" formula is the most natural and grammatically correct way to ask about duration in English.

## The Basic Formula
The standard question follows a strict word order:
**How long + does + it + take + to + [base verb]?**

* **How long**: The question word for duration.
* **does**: The auxiliary (helping) verb. We use *does* because the subject of the sentence is *it*.
* **it**: The "dummy" subject. It doesn't refer to a specific object; it just holds the place of the subject.
* **take**: The main verb, always in its base form.
* **to + verb**: The infinitive form of the action you are asking about.

✅ How long does it take to learn the guitar?
❌ How long time does it take to learn the guitar? *(Don't add the word "time" after "How long")*

✅ How long does it take to bake a cake?
❌ How long does it takes to bake a cake? *(The "s" goes on "does", so "take" must remain in its base form)*

## Adding a Specific Person
Sometimes you want to ask how much time a specific person needs to do something. For example, a professional might take 10 minutes to fix a tire, but a beginner might take an hour.

To add a person to the question, place the object pronoun (*me, you, him, her, us, them*) directly after the verb *take*.

**How long + does + it + take + [person] + to + [base verb]?**

* "How long does it take **you** to get to work?"
* "How long does it take **her** to run a marathon?"

## Answering the Question
When replying, use the same structure in the positive form. Because the subject is *it* and the sentence is in the present simple tense, the verb becomes **takes**.

**It + takes + [optional person] + [amount of time] + to + [base verb].**

* "It takes twenty minutes to drive to the beach."
* "It takes me half an hour by train."

## Common Mistakes to Watch Out For

**1. Forgetting the dummy subject "it"**
Because "it" doesn't translate well into many languages in this context, learners often drop it entirely. You must always include it.
✅ How long does it take to make dinner?
❌ How long does take to make dinner?

**2. Using the wrong auxiliary verb**
Remember that we are using the present simple tense with the singular subject *it*. Therefore, the auxiliary must be *does*. Do not use *is* or *do*.
✅ How long does it take to finish the homework?
❌ How long is it take to finish the homework?

**3. Forgetting the "to" before the action**
The action at the end of the question must be a full infinitive (*to* + verb).
✅ How long does it take to walk to campus?
❌ How long does it take walk to campus?

> See a quick refresher inside!

## How Indefinite Pronouns Are Built

English has a neat system for talking about unspecified people, things, and places. You take a **base word** — *some-*, *any-*, *no-*, or *every-* — and attach one of three endings:

- **-body / -one** → people (*somebody, anyone, nobody, everyone*)
- **-thing** → objects or ideas (*something, anything, nothing, everything*)
- **-where** → places (*somewhere, anywhere, nowhere, everywhere*)

That gives you a grid of about sixteen words, but the real question learners face is: **which base do I pick?**

## Some- vs. Any- vs. No-

**Some-** words appear in **positive statements, offers, and requests** — situations where you expect or hope the answer is "yes."

> ✅ *Somebody left a bag in the classroom.*
> ✅ *Would you like something to drink?*

**Any-** words appear in **questions, negatives, and conditionals** — situations that are open or uncertain.

> ✅ *Is there anything I can do to help?*
> ✅ *I haven't seen anyone all morning.*

**No-** words carry their own negative meaning, so the verb stays **positive** (more on this below).

> ✅ *There is nowhere to sit.* (= There isn't anywhere to sit.)

Here's a contrast that shows the difference clearly:

> ✅ *I found something strange in my bag.* (positive — I really did find it)
> ✅ *I didn't find anything strange in my bag.* (negative — verb is negative, so *anything*)
> ❌ *I didn't find something strange in my bag.* (mixing *something* with a negative verb sounds unnatural in most contexts)

## The Double-Negative Trap

This is the single biggest mistake at this level. Because *nobody*, *nothing*, and *nowhere* already mean "not … any-," you must **not** add another negative word to the same clause.

> ✅ *Nobody called me yesterday.*
> ❌ *Nobody didn't call me yesterday.*

> ✅ *She said nothing about the meeting.*
> ❌ *She didn't say nothing about the meeting.*

Both wrong versions contain two negatives, which is non-standard in English. If you want to use *didn't*, switch to the *any-* form:

> ✅ *She didn't say anything about the meeting.*

Think of it as a simple rule: **one clause, one negative element** — either the *no-* pronoun or the word *not*, never both together.

## Edge Cases Worth Knowing

**Any- in positive sentences.** When *any-* means "it doesn't matter which," it works perfectly well in a positive statement:

> ✅ *You can sit anywhere you like.*
> ✅ *Anybody could answer that question — it was easy.*

This catches learners off guard because they've memorised "any = negative/question." The key is meaning: if you're saying "whichever one, without restriction," *any-* is correct even without a negative.

**Some- in questions.** When you're offering something or you clearly expect "yes," *some-* is natural:

> ✅ *Could somebody help me carry this?* (You believe help is available.)
> ✅ *Did someone call while I was out?* (You suspect the answer is yes.)

Compare with a genuinely open question:

> ✅ *Did anyone call while I was out?* (You have no idea — you're just asking.)

The difference is subtle but real: **some-** signals expectation; **any-** signals openness.

## Quick Self-Check

Before you choose a pronoun, ask yourself three things:

1. **Am I talking about a person, a thing, or a place?** → Pick *-body/-one*, *-thing*, or *-where*.
2. **Is the sentence positive, negative, or a question?** → Lean toward *some-* for positive, *any-* for negative/question.
3. **Is there already a negative word (not, never, hardly)?** → If yes, use *any-*, not *no-*.

Get those three checks right and you'll handle almost every indefinite-pronoun sentence at this level without hesitation.

Basics. Indefinite Pronouns: Somebody, Anything, and Nowhere

Test your **Basics: Indirect Questions** skills with 12 questions at **medium** level.

## How Direct Questions Become Indirect

When you ask someone a question directly, you use inverted word order — the verb comes before the subject. But when you wrap that question inside a polite phrase or a longer sentence, the word order flips back to the normal **subject + verb** pattern. That's an indirect question.

Compare these two:

> **Direct:** Where does she work?
> **Indirect:** Could you tell me where she works?

Notice what changed. The auxiliary "does" disappeared, and the verb moved back after the subject ("she works" instead of "does she work"). The sentence sounds softer, more polite — and that's exactly why we use indirect questions.

The most common introductory phrases are **Could you tell me…**, **Do you know…**, **I was wondering…**, **Can you explain…**, and **I'd like to know…**. These phrases act as a signal: everything that follows uses **statement word order**, not question word order.

## Yes/No Questions Need "if" or "whether"

Direct questions that start with an auxiliary (Is he…? Do they…? Can we…?) don't have a question word like *where* or *when*. When you make them indirect, you need to add **if** or **whether** as a connector:

> ❌ Do you know is the museum open on Sundays?
> ✅ Do you know **if** the museum is open on Sundays?

Both *if* and *whether* work here. Some teachers will tell you *whether* is slightly more formal, but in practice they're interchangeable in most indirect questions.

## Wh-Questions Keep Their Question Word

If the direct question already has a question word (*what, where, when, why, how, who*), you keep it — but you still change the word order:

> ❌ I'd like to know **where is** the nearest pharmacy.
> ✅ I'd like to know **where the nearest pharmacy is**.

Here's another pair:

> ❌ Can you tell me **what time does the train leave**?
> ✅ Can you tell me **what time the train leaves**?

In the incorrect versions, the learner kept the inverted (question) word order after the introductory phrase. That's the single most common mistake at B1–B2, and it comes from a natural instinct: the sentence *feels* like a question, so your brain wants question grammar. Resist it. After the introductory phrase, use **subject + verb**, as if you were making a statement.

## Punctuation and Tone

This catches people off guard: not every indirect question ends with a question mark. It depends on the introductory phrase.

If the outer sentence is itself a question, use a question mark:

> **Could you tell me** where the meeting is**?**

If the outer sentence is a statement, use a full stop:

> **I wonder** where the meeting is**.**

> **I'd like to know** what time it starts**.**

The phrase *I was wondering…* is technically a statement, so grammatically it takes a full stop — though in casual writing many people add a question mark anyway.

## The Mistake That Costs the Most Marks

Let's be direct about this. The error that B1–B2 learners make over and over is **using inverted word order inside the indirect question**:

> ❌ She asked me where **had I** been.
> ✅ She asked me where **I had** been.

> ❌ Do you know how much **does this cost**?
> ✅ Do you know how much **this costs**?

The fix is mechanical: after the question word (or after *if/whether*), write the subject first, then the verb — exactly as you would in a normal sentence like "This costs ten euros." If you can train yourself to treat everything after the introductory phrase as a statement, you'll get indirect questions right almost every time.

One last edge case worth knowing: when **who** or **what** is the subject of the question, the word order doesn't actually change, because it was already subject-first:

> **Direct:** Who won the match?
> **Indirect:** Do you know who won the match?

No inversion to undo — so the two forms look nearly identical. Don't overthink it; just keep the same order.

Forming Indirect Questions

Why do English speakers say "It is raining" instead of just "Is raining"? Master the dummy subject by practicing how to correctly use **"it" for time**, **weather conditions**, and **distance**.

> See a quick refresher inside!

## The "Dummy" Subject Rule

In many languages, if you want to say that rain is falling or that the time is 8:00 AM, you don't need a subject. You can just start with the verb.

English is different. Every complete sentence in English strictly requires a subject and a verb. When we talk about facts like time, weather, or distance, there is no real "doer" of the action. Who or what is doing the raining? Nothing! To fix this grammatical problem, English uses the pronoun **it** as a placeholder or "dummy" subject. It doesn't mean anything; it simply fills the empty space so the sentence is grammatically correct.

## Time, Weather, and Distance

You must use _it_ as the subject for three main categories of information:

**1. Time (Clocks, days, dates, and seasons)**
When someone asks "What time is it?", the answer must start with _it_. Do not use _this_, _that_, or _the time_.
✅ It is almost midnight.
❌ This is almost midnight.
❌ The time it is almost midnight.

**2. Weather and Temperature**
Use _it_ with adjectives (sunny, cloudy, cold) or verbs (raining, snowing) that describe the weather.
✅ It is pouring rain outside.
❌ He is pouring rain outside.
✅ It is very cloudy and cold.

**3. Distance**
When describing how far away something is, _it_ is the standard subject.
✅ It is very far to the nearest pizza place.
❌ Here is very far to the nearest pizza place.
✅ It is only one mile away!

## The "It is" vs. "There is" Trap

A very common mistake for B1-B2 learners is confusing **it is** with **there is** when talking about the weather.

Here is the rule:
Use **it is** with _adjectives_ and _verbs_ (sunny, cloudy, raining, snowing).
Use **there is** with _nouns_ (sun, clouds, rain, snow).

✅ It is very windy today. _(windy = adjective)_
❌ There is very windy today.

✅ There is a strong wind today. _(a strong wind = noun phrase)_
❌ It is a strong wind today.

## Dropping the Subject Completely

If your native language is Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, or another "pro-drop" language, your biggest temptation will be to drop the subject entirely. Because _it_ doesn't translate to a meaningful word in your head, it feels natural to just leave it out. In English, this is always incorrect.

✅ It is only six o'clock!
❌ Is only six o'clock!

✅ It's a very short walk from here.
❌ Is a very short walk from here.

Always double-check your sentences. If you are talking about the time, the weather, or how far away something is, make sure the word **it** is sitting right at the front of your clause.

Must vs. Have To: Expressing Obligation

Test your **Basics: Mustn't vs. Don't Have To** skills with 10 questions at **medium** level.

## What Each One Actually Means

These two expressions look similar, but they point in completely opposite directions. Getting them mixed up can cause real confusion — or even alarm.

**Mustn't** (must not) means **it is forbidden; don't do it**. There is a rule, a law, or a strong reason that says "no."

**Don't have to** (also *doesn't have to*) means **it is not necessary; you can if you want, but there is no obligation**.

Think of it this way: *mustn't* closes a door and locks it; *don't have to* leaves the door open and lets you choose.

## Worked Examples

> ✅ You **mustn't** park in front of the hospital entrance. *(It's prohibited — you'll get a fine.)*
> ❌ You **don't have to** park in front of the hospital entrance. *(This accidentally says "parking there is optional," as though it were simply one choice among many — it misses the idea that it's against the rules.)*

Now flip the situation:

> ✅ You **don't have to** wear a suit to the office — jeans are fine. *(There's no rule requiring a suit.)*
> ❌ You **mustn't** wear a suit to the office. *(This says suits are banned, which is a completely different message.)*

Notice how swapping one for the other doesn't just sound a little off — it reverses the meaning.

## Where Learners Go Wrong

The single biggest mistake at B1–B2 level is using *mustn't* when you mean *don't have to*. This usually happens because in many other languages the same word covers both prohibition and lack of necessity. In English, those ideas have separate forms, and confusing them can sound dramatic or even rude.

Imagine a colleague asks, "Do I need to finish this report tonight?" You want to reassure them:

> ✅ "No, you **don't have to** finish it tonight — tomorrow morning is fine."
> ❌ "No, you **mustn't** finish it tonight." *(This sounds like you're ordering them to stop working, as if finishing it tonight would cause some kind of problem.)*

**Quick test you can run in your head:** replace the phrase with *it's not allowed* and *it's not necessary*. Whichever fits the situation tells you which form you need.

- *You mustn't touch the paintings.* → "It's not allowed to touch the paintings." ✅ Makes sense.
- *You don't have to tip in Japan.* → "It's not necessary to tip in Japan." ✅ Makes sense.

If you try the wrong substitution, the sentence falls apart — and that's your signal to switch.

## Edge Cases Worth Knowing

**"Don't need to" and "needn't"** work like *don't have to* — they express lack of necessity, not prohibition. So *You needn't bring anything* = *You don't have to bring anything*. They're safe synonyms.

**"Must not" in formal writing** sometimes appears in legal or technical texts where you might expect a softer phrase. Signs, manuals, and regulations love *must not*: "Passengers must not lean against the doors." In everyday speech, people often replace it with **can't** — "You can't lean against the doors" — which also signals prohibition but feels less formal.

**Past forms** are another trap. *Mustn't* has no past tense of its own. For past prohibition, English switches to **wasn't/weren't allowed to**: *We weren't allowed to use phones during the exam.* For past lack of necessity, use **didn't have to** or **didn't need to**: *We didn't have to wear uniforms at my old school.*

Keeping the core contrast clear — **forbidden vs. optional** — will steer you right in almost every case.

Mustn't vs. Don't Have To

Do you know why we say "I **don't** know" but "I **haven't** seen it"? Test your ability to choose the correct **negative contractions** for the verbs **be**, **do**, and **have** in everyday situations.
> See a quick refresher inside!

## The Big Three: Be, Do, and Have

In English, we rarely speak in full, uncontracted sentences. Instead of saying "do not" or "is not," we push the words together to create contractions like **don't**, **isn't**, and **haven't**.

Choosing the right contraction depends entirely on the main verb or the structure of the sentence. The three most common auxiliary (helper) verbs are *be*, *do*, and *have*. If you use the wrong one, the sentence immediately sounds broken.

## When to Use "Isn't" vs. "Don't"

**Isn't** is the contraction for *is not*. You use it when the main verb of the sentence is the verb *to be*. This happens in two main situations:
1. When describing a state, location, or noun (using adjectives or nouns).
2. When using the present continuous tense (is + verb-ing).

✅ The soup isn't hot enough. *(Describing a state)*
✅ The Wi-Fi isn't working today. *(Present continuous action)*
❌ The soup doesn't hot enough.

**Don't** is the contraction for *do not*. You use it to make standard action verbs negative in the present simple tense for *I, you, we,* and *they*. It is used for facts, habits, and routines.

✅ I don't eat broccoli.
✅ The guests don't know where to park.
❌ The guests aren't know where to park.

## The Tricky Case of "Haven't"

**Haven't** is the contraction for *have not*. It is primarily used as a helper verb in the present perfect tense (have + past participle) to talk about life experiences or recent actions.

✅ I haven't found the museum yet.
✅ We haven't seen the dessert menu.
❌ I don't found the museum yet.

You will also see **haven't** used to talk about possession, but *only* when it is paired with the word **got**.

✅ I haven't got the balloons yet.
✅ We haven't got any cat treats left.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

The most frequent mistake learners make is mixing up how to talk about possession.

In modern English, if you want to say you do not own something, you have two correct choices: you can use *don't have* (American and universal standard) or *haven't got* (common in British English).

However, you cannot just say *haven't* followed by a noun. Without the word "got," *have* acts as a normal action verb, meaning it needs *don't* to become negative.

✅ I don't have the stolen diamonds.
✅ I haven't got the stolen diamonds.
❌ I haven't the stolen diamonds.

Another major trap is forgetting about the third-person singular (he, she, it). While *I, you, we,* and *they* use **don't** and **haven't**, *he, she,* and *it* require **doesn't** and **hasn't**.

✅ He doesn't know the password to the safe.
❌ He don't know the password to the safe.

Always look at the subject of the sentence and the word immediately following the gap. If it's an adjective or an "-ing" word, you need a form of *be* (*isn't/aren't*). If it's a base verb, you need *do* (*don't/doesn't*). If it's a past participle or the word "got," you need *have* (*haven't/hasn't*).

Basics. Negative Contractions: Isn't, Haven't, and Don't

Test your **Basics: No, None, Any** skills with 12 questions at **medium** level.

## How No, None, and Any Work

These three words all express the idea of "zero" or "not some," but they play different grammatical roles and appear in different sentence positions. Mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes at this level, so let's sort them out.

**No** is a **determiner** — it sits directly before a noun, replacing "a," "any," or "some."

> ✅ There are **no** tickets left for tonight's show.
> ❌ There are **none** tickets left for tonight's show.

Because *no* already fills the determiner slot, you never need another article or determiner next to it (*no the, no a, no some* are all impossible).

**None** is a **pronoun** — it stands alone, without a noun after it. Use it when the noun has already been mentioned or is understood.

> ✅ I checked every shelf. **None** were in stock.
> ❌ I checked every shelf. **No** were in stock.

When you want to be more specific, use **none of + determiner + noun** (or **none of + pronoun**):

> ✅ **None of the students** handed in the essay on time.
> ✅ I invited ten people, but **none of them** came.

**Any** appears mainly in **negative sentences, questions, and conditionals**. In a negative sentence, the verb carries the negation (*don't, hasn't, won't*), and *any* follows:

> ✅ We **don't** have **any** milk.
> ✅ We have **no** milk. *(same meaning, different structure)*
> ❌ We **don't** have **no** milk. *(double negative — see below)*

## The Double-Negative Trap

This is the single biggest pitfall. English does not allow two negatives in the same clause to reinforce each other (unlike Spanish, French, or many other languages). If the verb is already negative, use *any*; if you use *no*, keep the verb positive.

> ❌ She **didn't** give me **no** explanation.
> ✅ She **didn't** give me **any** explanation.
> ✅ She gave me **no** explanation.

Both correct versions mean exactly the same thing. Pick one pattern and stay consistent within a sentence.

## Any in Positive Sentences

Learners often assume *any* can only appear in negatives and questions, but it also works in positive statements to mean **"it doesn't matter which"**:

> ✅ You can sit in **any** chair — they're all free.
> ✅ **Any** student who passes the exam will receive a certificate.

Here *any* doesn't mean "zero"; it means "whichever one, without restriction." Context makes the difference clear.

## None: Singular or Plural Verb?

Grammars disagree, and in practice both are used. When *none* refers to an uncountable noun, the verb is singular:

> ✅ None of the information **was** useful.

When it refers to a countable plural noun, you'll hear both:

> ✅ None of the guests **have** arrived. *(common in everyday English)*
> ✅ None of the guests **has** arrived. *(more formal)*

For exams and formal writing, many teachers prefer the singular verb with *none*, since the word historically means "not one." In conversation, the plural is perfectly natural.

## Quick Decision Guide

Ask yourself two questions:

1. **Is there a noun right after the word?** → Use **no** (*no reason, no money, no idea*).
2. **Does the noun come later, or has it already been mentioned?** → Use **none** or **none of** (*none of the answers, none at all*).
3. **Is the verb already negative?** → Use **any**, not *no* (*I can't find any, I haven't seen any*).

A final common error: don't confuse *none* with *nothing*. **None** replaces a countable or uncountable noun you've been talking about; **nothing** means "not a thing" in a more general sense. *"What did you buy?" — "Nothing."* But *"How many did you buy?" — "None."*

Get these three distinctions right and you'll avoid the mistakes that make even advanced learners stumble.

> See a quick refresher inside!

## Where do object pronouns actually go?

In English, object pronouns (**me, you, him, her, it, us, them**) replace nouns that receive the action of a verb or follow a preposition. The core rule is simple: **an object pronoun goes after the verb or after the preposition it belongs to** — never before the verb the way many other languages work.

> ✅ The teacher helped **him** after class.
> ❌ The teacher **him** helped after class.

If you speak Spanish, French, Italian, or another Romance language, your instinct is to slide the pronoun in front of the verb. English doesn't do this. The pronoun sits right where the full noun would sit:

> *The teacher helped **Marco** after class.* → *The teacher helped **him** after class.*

The position doesn't change.

## Direct and indirect objects together

Things get trickier when a verb takes two objects — a direct object (the thing) and an indirect object (the person). English gives you two legal word orders:

**Pattern A — indirect pronoun first, no preposition:**

> ✅ She gave **him** the book.

**Pattern B — direct object first, indirect pronoun after *to/for*:**

> ✅ She gave the book to **him**.

Both are correct. But watch what happens when *both* objects are pronouns:

> ✅ She gave **it** to **him**.
> ❌ She gave **him it**.

That second version sounds unnatural to most native speakers (though some regional dialects accept it). The safe rule: **when both objects are pronouns, use the preposition pattern** (*verb + it/them + to/for + him/her/us/them*).

## After prepositions — no exceptions

After any preposition, you must use the object form. This applies even when the pronoun feels far from the verb:

> ✅ This message is for **her** and **me**.
> ❌ This message is for **she** and **I**.

The second version is one of the most common mistakes at every level, partly because people over-correct. They remember being told "say *she and I*" as a subject, and they start using it everywhere — including after prepositions, where it's wrong. A quick test: drop the other person and listen. *"This message is for I"* sounds immediately wrong, so **me** is correct.

## The mistake that trips everyone up

B1–B2 learners most often stumble with **compound structures** — sentences where a pronoun is paired with another name or pronoun using *and*:

> ✅ The manager called **Sarah and me** into the office.
> ❌ The manager called **Sarah and I** into the office.

Again, remove "Sarah and" mentally: *"The manager called I into the office"* — clearly wrong. The object pronoun **me** is what you need.

The same test works in reverse to confirm a subject pronoun:

> ✅ **Sarah and I** called the manager. (*"I called the manager"* — fine.*)
> ❌ **Sarah and me** called the manager.

One more thing: reflexive pronouns (**myself, yourself**, etc.) are not interchangeable with plain object pronouns. Saying *"The manager called Sarah and myself"* is a common dodge people use when they're unsure about *me* vs. *I*. It's not standard — **myself** is for when the subject and object are the same person (*I hurt myself*). Don't use it as a safe middle option.

Keep the drop-the-other-person test in your pocket. It resolves nearly every pronoun-placement question you'll face at this level.
