In English, we often drop the when we talk about institutions for their general purpose — the reason most people go there. This applies to places like school, church, prison, hospital, university, and court.
The idea is simple: when someone is using the institution in its typical, expected way, no article is needed. When someone is there for a different reason — visiting, cleaning, repairing — we use the, because we're now talking about the building, not the activity.
✅ She goes to church every Sunday. (She goes to worship — that's what church is for.) ✅ The architect went to the church to inspect the roof. (He's not worshipping; he's visiting the building.)
✅ He's been in prison for two years. (He's a prisoner — that's the institution's purpose for him.) ✅ His mother went to the prison to visit him. (She's not a prisoner; she's visiting a specific building.)
Notice how the meaning shifts. "He's in prison" tells us about his situation in life. "He's in the prison" tells us about his physical location — he could be a plumber fixing a pipe.
Which Institutions Follow This Pattern?
Not every building works this way. The pattern is strongest with a small group of nouns:
- school / college / university — She's at university (she's a student).
- church — They're at church (they're attending a service).
- prison / jail — He's in prison (he's serving a sentence).
- hospital — She's in hospital (she's a patient). ⚠️ See the note on American English below.
- court — He's in court today (he's involved in a legal case).
- bed / work / home — These behave similarly: go to bed, be at work, come home.
You cannot extend this freely to other buildings. We don't say "She's in supermarket" or "He went to library." Those always need an article or determiner.
❌ I need to go to library after class. ✅ I need to go to the library after class.
British vs. American English
One important split: hospital.
In British English, you say She's in hospital (no article) when she's a patient. In American English, the normal form is She's in the hospital — even when she's a patient. Both are correct in their variety, but mixing them in an exam or essay can look inconsistent. Pick the variety you're learning and stick with it.
✅ (BrE) He was rushed to hospital after the accident. ✅ (AmE) He was rushed to the hospital after the accident.
The Mistake That Catches Everyone
The most common error at B1–B2 level is using "the" when you should drop it — especially with school and university:
❌ My daughter starts the school in September. ✅ My daughter starts school in September.
The sentence is about entering the education system, not about a specific building. Adding the makes it sound like you're pointing at a particular school — which isn't the intended meaning here.
The reverse error also happens. If you're describing a specific visit to a building, dropping the article sounds odd:
❌ The plumber arrived at hospital to fix the heating. ✅ The plumber arrived at the hospital to fix the heating.
A plumber is not a patient. He needs the because he's going to a physical place, not using the institution for its core purpose.
Quick test you can apply every time: Ask yourself, "Is this person using the place for what it's designed for?" If yes, drop the article. If no, keep the.
