There is a question about a fish. The instructions say "TWO WORDS". You clearly heard the recording saying "the red herring" and this is the only fishy thing in the recording. What will likely be considered the answer?
IELTS answer tables, which examiners use to mark the answer sheets, sometimes allow some variations, but failure to follow word count instructions will likely result in the answer considered wrong. When there is an ambiguity, it's often useful to check what words already exist in the text of the question itself. This might indicate that they are not the part of the answer. If there is no other way to resolve the ambiguity, which is rare, articles are the first candidate for exclusion. Usually in such cases the phrase without any article is still correct.

You feel that the worst is about to happen and you need to visit toilet immediately.
What should you do?
To go to toilet, you need to draw the invigilator's attention raising your hand. Please note that although you can do this during any part of the exam, extra time is not given for toilet breaks. As Listening is a non-stop activity, and Writing time and word limits are challenging, it's considered practical for most test takers, if at all, to only go to toilet during Reading.

IELTS Speaking
- Part 1 (4–5 min): familiar topics — home, work, hobbies
- Part 2 (3–4 min): 1-minute prep, then 1–2 minute monologue on a task card
- Part 3 (4–5 min): abstract discussion linked to Part 2 topic
- Scored on: fluency, vocabulary, grammar range, pronunciation
IELTS Speaking is an 11–14 minute live interview testing spontaneous spoken English. The examiner isn't testing your opinions — they're testing your language.
Key strategy: extend answers beyond 1–2 sentences. Use discourse markers (Well, Actually, To be honest) to buy thinking time. Paraphrase rather than repeat.
IELTS Writing
- Task 1 (20 min, 150+ words): describe a chart/graph (Academic) or write a letter (General)
- Task 2 (40 min, 250+ words): argumentative essay on a given topic
- Scored on: task response, coherence, vocabulary, grammar
- Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1
IELTS Writing tests structured written production under time pressure. Two tasks, 60 minutes total. Task 2 carries double the weight — prioritise it.
Key strategy: spend 5 minutes planning before writing. A planned essay with clear paragraphs scores higher than a longer, rambling one.
IELTS Listening
- Section 1: social conversation (e.g., booking a hotel)
- Section 2: social monologue (e.g., tour guide)
- Section 3: academic discussion (e.g., students planning a project)
- Section 4: academic lecture (monologue, hardest)
IELTS Listening = 30 minutes, 40 questions, 4 recordings played ONCE. Tests ability to follow conversations and lectures at native speed across multiple accents.
Key strategy: read questions before each recording plays. The answers come in order — if you miss one, move on immediately or you'll miss the next.
IELTS
- Listening: 30 min, 40 questions, 4 recordings (played once)
- Reading: 60 min, 40 questions, 3 passages
- Writing: 60 min, 2 tasks (chart + essay or letter + essay)
- Speaking: 11–14 min, face-to-face interview
IELTS is the world's most widely accepted English proficiency test: four sections, scored 0–9, accepted by universities, employers, and immigration bodies in 140+ countries.
Key fact: IELTS tests all four skills equally. Your overall band is the average — one weak section drags the whole score down.
IELTS Reading
- 60 minutes, 3 passages, 40 questions (no extra transfer time)
- True / False / Not Given — the trickiest question type
- Matching headings, gap-fill, multiple choice, short answer
- Academic: journal/textbook level. General Training: workplace/everyday texts.
IELTS Reading tests fast, accurate comprehension under time pressure. 20 minutes per passage is the target pace — most candidates run out of time, not ability.
Key strategy: don't read the whole passage first. Skim headings/first sentences, then go straight to questions and scan for keywords. Speed comes from strategy, not faster reading.
